What It WasThe Pacific Commons retail center needed to announce that the stores were open for business. Sussman Prejza designed the elegant tall tower sign and pedestrian scale ID signs. The wedge like 80 ft tower reduces in size as it ascends creating a pyramid like appearance. As the light’s brightness naturally diminishes inside the rising sections, the light’s gradual dimming accentuates tower’s pyramid form. What We DidLocating 3 powerful narrow beam spotlights inside the tower’s base allowed the light to travel through the interior volume. This provided fairly even illumination along the tower’s lower section of white horizontal slats. At the middle sections, the black signage bands are light boxes with internal fluorescent fixtures supply even backlighting for the cut-out letters. At the top of black signage bands, we positioned 3 smaller, less powerful narrow beam spotlights to light the tower’s upper section. Why It WorkedThe tower’s inherently simple design, open interior, and white finish created the optimal conditions for lighting to reveal the design’s physical form with a handful of long-life fixtures. We chose high performance fixtures which are more expensive; however, we only used 6 fixtures within the tower shaft. The low fixture count allowed us to reduce the equipment and installation costs greatly. | |||||||||||||
